A Guide to CBD Dosage for Dogs

  • Kirsten Thornhill - 26.06.2020

CBD is quickly on the rise in the human and pet world. Scientists are finding that the safety profile of cannabidiol (CBD) may also be safe and beneficial for our four-legged pals too. As I’m sure you have tons of questions, there are tons of answers, hopefully.

If you’re interested in using cannabidiol for yourself or your four-legged fur child, your curiosity and thirst for knowledge must be ringing off the hook. Is it effective? Is it safe? Does it work? Can my dog get high? What dosage is right for my dog?

Don’t trip potato chip - here, at Petly CBD, we’ve got you covered. In today’s article, we’ll discuss how to find the right CBD product for your pup as well as what dosage is most suitable for your pet.

Let’s get to it!

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant. The cannabis family embodies both the hemp and marijuana plants. The biggest difference between the hemp and marijuana plant is the tetrahydrocannabinol content, commonly referred to as THC.

The marijuana plant contains a large amount of THC, the psychoactive compound of the plant. On the other hand, however, the hemp plant contains little to no THC (usually less than 0.3%).

Cannbidiol can be derived from both the marijuana and hemp plants. Nonetheless, CBD is more plentiful in the hemp plant. So when we talk about CBD for dogs, we’re definitely talking about CBD oil derived from the hemp plant.

With the internet being a major source of information, the beautiful health benefits of CBD oil for humans is spreading like fire. What about CBD for pets though?

The benefits of cannabinoids are so exciting that many paw parents want to extend the benefits to their pets too. Are there CBD treats and CBD products for pets? You bet!

Can I Give My Dog My CBD Oil?

CBD oil interacts with the human body through our endocannabinoid system, the ECS for short.

Cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, work with our ECS to give us many of the health benefits associated with cannabis.

Fortunately enough, our ECS is very similar to our pet’s ECS. Thus, the health benefits you receive from a daily dose of CBD can also be beneficial to your four-legged friend!

There are two questions that commonly freaks paw parents out though: will it get my dog high? Is it safe? We recommend consulting with your vet before making a change to your dog’s routine.

Anyhoo, CBD oil is SAFE for your dog and it will NOT get your dog high. If the CBD is hemp-derived, a natural and legal oil, your dog will get little to no traces of THC.

Quality CBD products will contain almost no THC or no THC for that matter. With little to no THC present, there’s almost no way your furry friend will get “high” or “stoned”.

The cannabinoid products you buy for your pets should come from the hemp plant.

How Does CBD Affect My Dog?

CBD oil can be helpful for your dog’s daily living in numerous ways. First, it may promote a sense of calmness and relaxation, support healthy joints and bones, and may even relieve stiffness that is associated with everyday activity and exercise.

Many paw parents are looking to give their dog CBD to promote relaxation, especially during stressful situations like fireworks, car rides, or thunderstorms.

The beautiful benefits that humans experience from using CBD may benefit your pup more than you think.

How Much CBD Do I Give My Dog?

Choosing the proper dose of CBD for your dog can be tricky. There are so many CBD products, ranging from CBD oil for dogs to CBD treats for dogs, so deciding on a dose or accurate dose can be confusing. Once you’re rehearsed in the factors involved, an appropriate CBD dosage will be much easier to navigate.

With anything, some dogs may react differently than others. Because of this, you should try and keep a close eye on your dog and work to adjust their dosage accordingly.

The amount of hemp CBD oil you give your pooch depends on 1) their ailment and 2) their body weight.

A good formula we recommend pet parents to use when deciding a CBD dose for your dog is:

0.25 mg of CBD per body weight of your dog

For instance, if your dog weighs 9 lbs, maybe start them at a CBD dosage of 2.25 mg.

Another important factor to consider when searching for the appropriate dosage is the age of your dog. This can definitely have an effect on the potency of the CBD dose. For example, a younger dog may not be as affected by a CBD dose compared to an older, full-grown doggo.

Thus, younger pups may need a higher dose to reap the desired effects from the hemp oil.

The type of CBD product that a paw parent uses can also affect the dose. If you give your pup a CBD tincture oil, it can result in fast-acting benefits. A CBD dog treat, however, may also contain other ingredients, making the treat metabolizing slower.

Regardless of how the CBD gets into their system, all quality CBD products (like Petly CBD) are very effective, depending on your pet’s needs.

Always be certain to follow the dosage recommendations closely as well as monitor how your dog reacts to the CBD. Based on how your pup responds to the oil, you may need to increase or decrease the dosage to better fit their needs.

How Much CBD is in a CBD Dog Treat or Tincture Oil?

When looking to buy CBD products, take a closer look at the packing. The package usually lists the total amount of CBD in the product. Because of this, it’s crucial that you read the product carefully so you don’t assume one may be more potent than the other.

With CBD tincture oils, you have have to do a little math here. It really depends on if the dose is determined per dop or how many drops are in the dropper alone.

Most products will tell you how many milligrams are in one full dropper. If this is the case, you can easily calculate out the CBD dose.

IF the CBD oil says that the bottle contains 35 mg of CBD per one dropper, you can fill the dropper yourself to the desired measurement line.

Let’s say the average of drops in one full dropper is 30. You could divide 35 mg by 30 drops. So, there’s about 1.2 mg of CBD in each drop you give fido. Boom, you’re a dosing wiz!

What Are the Possible Side Effects of CBD for Your Dog?

CBD does have many great benefits, but there are some potential adverse effects that you should look out for. Paw parents should keep an eye out for these side effects, including:

  • Sleepiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

CBD Oil for Dogs: The Dosage

Quick tip: pay attention to the difference between a milliliter and a milligram. Most CBD tincture oil droppers are labeled in milliliters, NOT milligrams. Just make sure to measure out the dose of CBD in milligrams, since it is a smaller unit of measure.

Here, at Petly CBD, we have different crafted different tincture oil products, specially formulated for your dog’s size.

For dogs 50 lbs and over, we recommend our Pet Hemp CBD Oil for Large Dogs 500 mg. Each bottle contains 30 droppers at 16.6mg per dropper.

For dogs 26 - 50 lbs, we recommend our Pet Hemp CBD Oil for Medium Dogs 250 mg. Each bottle contains 30 droppers at 8.33mg per dropper.

For dogs under 25 lbs, we recommend our Pet Hemp CBD Oil for Small Dogs 125 mg. Each bottle contains 30 droppers at 4.16mg per dropper.

These natural products combine only two natural compounds that support canine health—broad-spectrum hemp extract and MCT coconut oil.

How Do I Choose a CBD Product For My Dog?

It’s best to purchase high-quality CBD for your dog. CBD products can be manufactured and processed differently across the board, thus, there may be different levels of CBD potency. So one milligram of CBD from company A might work wonders, but CBD from company B might require a higher dose.

There are numerous things that may affect the quality of CBD in your products, such as:

Is it lab tested?

Is it high-quality?

Baking temperature?

Is it a CBD isolate?

Is it a full-spectrum?

Are there other ingredients present?

CBD Dosage for Dogs: Final Thoughts

When all is said and done, deciding what is best for your furry friend is a personal decision and definitely one you can always talk to your vet about. One important thing to remember is that the research backing CBD for pets is still very sparse.

If you decide to use CBD for your doggo, less is more when it comes to their dosage, monitor your pup, use a high-quality hemp product, and be aware of potential adverse effects.

CBD is generally considered safe but if you ever have any concerns, call your veterinarian.
