CBD Oil For Dogs

CBD Oil For Dogs

  • Kirsten Thornhill - 17.01.2020

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a liquid oil derived from the cannabis plant.

Because CBD oil is derived from a plant, it is 100% all-natural, making CBD a go-to oil in the world of natural remedies.

CBD oil for dogs? It is sparking conversations that are quickly growing day and night, but how does it all exactly work for your doggo?

Common Concerns - Is CBD Oil Legal?

With its rapid rise in popularity moving at a swift speed, there are quite a few misconceptions regarding CBD oil that are also coming forth.

In terms of CBD oil for dogs, many pet owners may have concerns about what this stuff exactly is.

Will CBD make my pup feel high? Is it safe? Is it weed? Can I buy marijuana for my dog? Is it even marijuana? Is this stuff legal? How is this stuff legal?

We are here to shed light on these growing misconceptions and explain just why so many dog owners (like you) are becoming interested in this all-natural oil. We’re here to help as many pet owners as possible benefit from CBD oil for your doggos!

We will do our best to make this short and sweet! We know that you’re interested in all the ways that CBD can help your dogs. However, we think it’s essential to know how it all works so you can spread (like peanut butter) the knowledge of this incredible herb.

CANNABIS, MARIJUANA, AND HEMP PLANTS

First things first - the cannabis plant, also known as Cannabis sativa, is a large umbrella term that people often use to discuss its two main species. The two species of this cannabis plant are the marijuana plant (also known as “mary J”) and the hemp plant.

The cannabis plant contains well over 80 different cannabinoids! Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that have an effect on the nervous and immune systems.

Here sits the cause for one of the largest misconceptions behind CBD oil for dogs.

While there are definitely similarities between the two species of the Cannabis sativa plant, there are also numerous differences.

The hemp plant and the marijuana plant have incredible medicinal properties - however, the marijuana plant is most recognized for its psychoactive effects. The “mary J” plant is most commonly used for recreational purposes, popularly known for getting "high".

Oils and products, including CBD oil, that are taken from the marijuana plant, are legal in states where medical marijuana is legal.

You may be familiar with products from the hemp plant, however. Hemp has already been commonly used and seen in fibers, food, and fuel.

The hemp plant and its associated oils, such as CBD oil, have only recently become legal on the federal level - thank you 2018 Farm Bill. This part of federal legislation removed hemp from the list of schedule 1 controlled substances and deemed it federally legal to produce hemp, given that it does not contain more than 0.3% THC. The passing of this bill allowed for greater, widespread cultivation of hemp and its oil products. This is a major win for the CBD oil industry! Check. Mate.

Diving into the legal complexities surrounding CBD can get confusing and murky instantly. Thus, we’ll leave all the legal explanations to the professionals and keep moving on with what you really want to know about CBD for your pup!

When people talk about CBD oil for dogs, they are referring to CBD that is derived from the hemp plant. Hemp is the non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. What does this mean? This means it won’t get your dog high or give your dog a “buzz.”

DOES CBD OIL MAKE YOU “HIGH”

THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of 80+ cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. THC produces a psychoactive effect, leading to individuals feeling “high” or “buzzed” when they ingest it. The marijuana plant is specifically cultivated to contain high (50-50%) amounts of THC.

On the other hand, or should I say, on the other cannabinoids, it has less than 0.3% THC. Thus, CBD oil from this hemp plant won’t get your doggo high. But, your pet will still reap all the medicinal benefits that the cannabis plant offers. Cool right? Right.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO KICK IN

There isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all answer here. There are many factors that come into play. For example, depending on the dosage, how fast your dog metabolizes the CBD, and the severity of the illness can contribute to determining how long it takes CBD oil to have an effect. With all that said, when you give some to your pup (topically or orally), CBD generally takes 20 to 40 minutes to take full effect. Keep in mind though, to see continued, consistent results, long-term use is required.

HOW TO USE CBD OIL FOR DOGS

The most efficient and effective way to administer CBD oil to your pup is with the dropper that’s included in the tincture package.

Owners can use the dropper to administer the CBD oil straight into their dog’s mouth.

We understand that you may have a picky eater on your hands, so we recommend trying to mix the CBD oil into their food or putting it on a favorite treat of theirs.

    CBD OIL DOSAGE FOR DOGS

Ready for more good news? Studies are continuing to suggest that CBD oil is safe for human and animal consumption. However, scientists are still determining the exact dosage.

The dosage is primarily determined by the weight and size of your pup.

Even though CBD oil is safe, we recommend starting your doggo off slow when introducing a new product into your dog’s life.

The same applies for CBD oil - trust us - before you know it, your dog will be feeling all the benefits that CBD has to offer. There’s no need to rush the inevitable.

Dog owners can start off with half of the recommended dosage and gradually work up to the recommended amount for their dog’s size and weight.

The great thing about CBD oil in tincture form is that pet parents have control over how much of the product they give to their dog.

    CBD SIDE EFFECTS FOR DOGS

The side effects of CBD are virtually nonexistent. In some studies and cases, lethargic feeling and tiredness have been shown to be reported.

However, these side effects can be quickly eliminated by reducing your pup’s dosage.

Even though CBD is all-natural and non-toxic, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to your four-legged pooch.

We encourage pet parents to keep an eye on their dog during the introductory stages of CBD oil implementation.
